Just like my previous post I feel like I need to barf rainbows like a pissed off unicorn after getting sucker punched while having an orgasm. To translate what I just wrote: I am angry and sort of happy then angry again, mostly confused because I don't know weather to dance or do some angry pushups.
Is Lady Gaga coming out as bi, lesbian, gay, trans?! Or, wait may be she's coming out as Lebanese or Orient?
Message to all pop stars out there:
Please stop trying to speak for others, you do not represent me you represent you. Come out of the closet and speak for yourself. Take some responsibility for your own experience!
Just give it a little watch 'n' listen and may be we can share the same experience...
There are a lot of pop songs out there that are fucked up and negative and directly degrading to people so I AM happy that there is a new song that is #1 on the charts that is all about being yourself and loving yourself. But seriously do we really need a rich girl to tell us to be brave, free, and love ourselves? Has she ever had to fight discrimination for anything? Is she saying she is queer? She has never denied it. She might mean well but she refers to some people as "orient"... seriously. Really!? ORIENT???!!! So to me this just negates all the positive things she might say about queer people because being queerer than her is not the same as being of a different race than her. Just because I am judged for who and how we fuck and what is between my legs doesn't mean I know what it is like to judged for the color of my skin. Even though a lot of people clump these ways of being discriminated together I don't believe they are actually related. Is she just another pop star appropriating and taking advantage of people?
The first time I heard of Lady Gaga was when she came to perform at Tranny Shack. FYI Tranny Shack is/was a decadent display of the finest drag queens and draggy performances that this side of the world has to offer. I then saw her perform at Gay Pride San Francisco 2007. She was wearing a black spandex body suit and had to androgynous back up dancers in neon spandex, I was mildly impressed but dance my ass off... because there was hardly any body there to get in my way. There was no explosions and light shows or latex with fake blood and egg pods, is was a free show. I thought she was just another San Francisco techno faux queen... I was wrong?
I would love to know what you think of this song. Is Lady Gaga doing justice or damage?
I watched Gaga perform this at the Grammy's. I can't say that I was too impressed with the lyrics. Using the words "orient" and "chola" made no sense to me. If she was really trying to be empowering, she could have used better word choices. Another blogger referred to Gaga as "Madonna-lite." I think that's the best description of her I've heard so far.
